Changing the Battery in Your Garage Door Opener

Do your kids rely on your garage door to get in and out of the house before and after school? Do you use the garage door opener as one of the easiest ways to get in the house, too?

Our “Back to School” Safety tip of the day is this: When the kids go back to school, it’s a great time to change your garage door battery annually. Ensure that the kids (and you!) can safely enter the house after school by installing a new 9 volt battery in your garage keypad or schedule a tune-up with us for your Garage Door & Operator.

Replace Batteries in At Least Two Places

Note that there are at least two places where you need to change your garage door batteries, and there may be three, depending on your system. Change batteries in:

• Your handheld garage door openers. These may be in your car or your kids may carry them in their backpacks.
• Your garage door keypad.
• Your overhead garage door opener.

All three of these should be included in your garage door opener battery replacement scheme. Replacing batteries in your handheld units and the keypad is usually straightforward. Sometimes, though, overhead garage door battery replacement is a little more complex.

Replacing Batteries in Your Overhead Garage Door Opener

The overhead unit on your garage door opener can be difficult to access. You may also need a different type of battery than the kind that goes in your handheld unit. Here’s how to replace the battery in this garage door opener.

1. Start by moving vehicles out of the garage until you can easily put a ladder under the overhead unit.
2. Carefully climb the ladder to examine the unit. Slide the battery compartment door off. If you need to unscrew it, get the appropriate screwdriver for your garage door opener battery replacement.
3. Make sure you have the right kind of batteries. Different garage door battery replacements require different types. You may be able to find this in the instruction manual for your garage door opener if you still have it.
4. Remove the old batteries and replace them with new ones. Screw the cover back on.
5. Climb down and make sure your garage door is working. If it is, you’re in luck. You learned how to replace the battery in your garage door opener.
6. If it’s not working, climb back up and make sure the batteries are placed properly. If it still doesn’t work, the batteries might be dead.
