How to Align Your Garage Door Sensors
If your garage door sensors get out of alignment, you may not be able to open or close your garage door. This can trap your vehicle inside the garage or make the whole thing impenetrable. If this happens to you, here’s what you need to know.
What is a Garage Door Sensor?
Your garage door sense detects objects or debris in the path of the garage door. If it finds anything there, it halts the garage door so it does not land on a person, a vehicle, or another piece of property.
There is one sensor on each side of your garage door. If either gets knocked out of the way, the door will not move because the system will think that there’s something in the way.
Whether it’s a residential or commercial garage door, these sensors must be in alignment for the garage door to work properly but more importantly to keep people and vehicles safe from the garage or overhead door coming down when beneath it.
Tips for Aligning Garage Door Sensors
If you find that your garage door sensor is not working, you may be able to realign the safety reversing sensor on your own. However it’s always better safe than sorry when it comes to aligning garage door sensors, so be sure to consult a professional if you’re not sure!
Here’s the best way to align garage door sensors:
- Make sure there’s nothing actually in the way of the sensors. Even a tiny corner of an object can block them, freezing your garage door until you move the item.
- Clean the garage door sensors. Make sure there’s no dust or debris on the lens. This can make the sensor think that it’s misaligned.
- Unscrew one sensor and move it slightly. You may want to measure how far down the bracket the other sensor is, then measure the one you’re moving to make sure it’s in the right place.
If you try aligning your garage door sensors and it’s not working, check their wiring. Rodents can eat the wires, making it seem as if the sensors are misaligned when you actually just need new wires.
